Five DDS students recently participated in the
Junior High All County Music Festival at FD
Roosevelt High School in nearby Hyde Park, New
York. Our participants again are: Zoe Wilson,
Gracie Howland chorus;  Adam Baker, symphonic
band (trumpet);  Shriman Balasubramanian, string
orchestra (violin); and Sasha Andracchio, wind
ensemble (really the advanced symphonic band -
clarinet). Following two days of intense rehearsal,
this collaboration of selected students performed in
three large instrumental ensembles and one 110
member choir.  Over 300 of the Dutchess County's
finest 7th, 8th and 9th grade music students
participated.

DDS students rehearsed on their own, with their
instrumental instructors and, in the case of the
singers, with our music director, Susan Bialek for
over a month to prepare. Susan Bialek commented
that, “The concerts are fabulous, but the process is
of paramount importance.”
DDS Students Participate in All County Music Festival
In addition to being an excellent experience for the
students, it is also a wonderful gathering of the
Dutchess County Music Educators Association who
sponsor this festival. “It's rejuvenating to be with these
colleagues,” said Bialek. Many teachers help with
rehearsals, chair different aspects of the festival, then
hold their annual meeting on Saturday morning of the
festival.  Susan Bialek, who has been the chair for the
choral ensemble four times in the last ten years and the
accompanist for the choir several times in fifteen years,
assisted with sectional rehearsals.

“This music festival was a wonderful, enriching
opportunity for our students to work collaboratively with
others from all over the county,” said John Cissel, Head
of School. “It provided a unique forum in which they
could grow musically, socially and creatively.”
