Earth Day
Friday Assembly - April 18, 2008
Sitting in a circle on the floor of the dining room, the DDS community gathered to celebrate Earth Day.
Each class made a contribution to this event that either informed or instructed our community on how
we can be better stewards of our planet. With sincerity, lower schoolers and upper schoolers shared
their dedication to helping the earth. Fifth graders talked about acid rain and its impact, while the
seventh graders presented their Earth Day projects. The heartfelt gathering finished with a planting of
Stuartia tree courtesy of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies.
Young meets Old(er)
Friday Assembly - May 2, 2008
I look at you and suddenly, something in your eyes I see;
Soon begins bewitching me.
It's that old devil moon that you stole from the skies.
It's that old devil moon in your eyes. (Sinatra, 1963)
Frank Sinatra’s words filled the air, and applause followed soon after on Friday, May 2, 2008.
Bringing 20th century songs to an audience that included many born in the 21st century, the Golden
Age Singing Society of Poughkeepsie graced the stage of the Abu-Haidar Dining Room-Auditorium at
DDS. Students and faculty alike were treated to the work of Henry Mancini, Lerner & Lowe and many
others. In addition to bringing this wonderful era of American music to new ears, the group was
amazing at imbuing their performance with humor. The DDS community is grateful for the
heartwarming performance last Friday and the group’s ability to evoke past memories and make new
ones.
