Lower School Program:
Grades K-4
In the Lower School Program, students learn
and discover in self-contained classrooms
with their classroom teachers and in the
music room, art studio, computer center,
gymnasium, science lab, and library with
faculty specialists in these fields. The
curriculum affords many opportunities for
creative writing and thinking, and for inventing
and building, while stressing the development
of a solid foundation in reading, writing and
mathematics. In addition, each grade focuses
on several social studies themes and
participates in a French language program.
An important part of the curriculum at
Dutchess Day is the incorporation of projects
and field trips that augment classroom study
and reinforce the integration of learning
across disciplines. From the kindergarten and
first grade trip to pick apples and pumpkins to
the third grade science lab on dissecting a
frog, students are actively engaged throughout
their school day.
