Athletics Program
At Dutchess Day School every student participates in physical education classes
two to four times a week during the school day. The Physical Education (P.E.)
program is designed to encourage physical activity and good sportsmanship. In the
early grades students learn basic motor and game skills. In the middle grades,
students learn the rules and concepts of games with an emphasis on teamwork,
cooperation and respect. In 7th and 8th grade, students gain sports experiences
that will help prepare them for the transition to high school sports.
In addition to the physical education curriculum, upper school students (grades 5-8)
may participate in an after-school athletics program in which sports teams compete
against teams from a number of regional private schools in New York and
Connecticut. While all students are encouraged to participate in one of the following
sports, participation is optional:
Fall: varsity and junior varsity soccer, field hockey
Winter: varsity and junior varsity basketball,
volleyball, squash
Spring: boys’ lacrosse, girls’ lacrosse,
tennis, golf
Outdoor sports are played on the playing fields of our 29-acre campus situated in a
picturesque country setting. Our tennis team and golf teams use the facilities at the
nearby Millbrook Golf and Tennis Club.
Indoor sports, as well as P.E. classes, take place in one of our two gymnasiums.
The newer gymnasium was opened in September of 2002 and features a full-sized
basketball court, girls and boys locker rooms, conference room, and office space.
The second gymnasium also houses a basketball court and locker rooms.
Between January and March, our Friday afternoon Ski and Skate Program offers
students the choice of skiing at the Catamount Ski Area (parent participation is
required for younger students) or ice skating at the Millbrook School rink. Lessons
for each sport are included.
